Collin-Mézin is probably one of the best known names in the violin trade. Although the quality of the instruments went rather downhill in the 20th century, pre-1900 violins by Collin-Mézin Senior are very sought after, partly because they represent the zenith of French workmanship at that period and are renowned for their huge tonal projection qualities.
Collin-Mézin was an Officier de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts and won gold and silver medals at the Paris Exhibitions in 1878, 1889, and 1900.
Charles Maucotel was the first of the Parisian makers to come to London. He made a handful of extremely fine violins for Edward Withers, this being one of them.
